Gallup, which apparently gets paid a lot of money to state, or at least quantify the obvious, notes that Republicans are extremely white.
89% -- nearly 9 in 10 Republicans -- are "Non-Hispanic white" and indeed white people are the only ethnic group Gallup tracks which identifies itself as more Republican than Democratic.
This is extremely bad news for Republicans as demographic trends suggest that the Non-Hispanic white population will shrink as a percentage of the population over the next 40 years or so with Latinos picking up most of the difference.
So if you were wondering why, in the course of the last few months, the GOP has done a complete about face on immigration and a path to citizenship for undocumented workers, now you know.
Democrats would do well to remember this. Republicans need a deal on immigration reform and they need it badly. While immigration reform would be a real feather in President Obama's cap, Democrats should think long and hard about what they're willing to give up in order to get Republicans on board.
Because if Republicans aren't willing to compromise on this issue, it won't be Democrats who suffer the political fallout.
